Succulent Dormancy Basics

Dormancy is a period when a succulent slows growth to survive seasonal stress. Some plants rest in summer, some in winter, and some only slow down depending on local conditions.

During dormancy, the plant may need less water and less disturbance. Repotting, heavy watering, fertilizing, or aggressive propagation can create problems if the plant is not actively growing.

Learn the general dormancy pattern of each plant, then compare it with your own climate and growing space.
